Star Wars: The High Republic

There are some new stories in the works for Star Wars literature with Project Luminous. They will be putting out some new books set in the era of the High Republic. This will be about 200 years before the Skywalker Saga and a few thousand years after the Old Republic. Disney is expanding its Star Wars reach from away from the screen and toward the printers for this new project. There will be adult novels and youth comics and books.

What to expect for Project luminous

Star Wars the high republic new novels coming out in August

Star Wars announced, “Star Wars: The High Republic is set in an era when the Galactic Republic and the Jedi Order are at their height, serving and protecting the galaxy. This is a hopeful, optimistic time when the Republic and the Jedi are noble and respected. This multi-year publishing program will be rolled out in phases, with Phase I being called “Light of the Jedi.” This period on the Star Wars timeline will not overlap any of the films or series currently planned for production, giving creators and partners space to tell Star Wars stories in a never-before-explored timeline.”

Disney and Lucasfilm will be working with a few different publishers to get these books and comics out, with the first one set to release in August 2020, The High Republic: Light of the Jedi. Charles Soule will be the author of this addition and will create a whole new story for us to follow, something that will not connect or cross-over with any film or project.

Soule is a popular writer and has shared his excitement to be working on a Star Wars novel, “I would be lying if I said I wasn’t thrilled to be finally writing a Star Wars novel… This is absolutely the largest thing I have worked on within the Star Wars universe.” His novel will include a disaster that will affect all of the other future Project Luminous storylines.

Not to worry, you’ll be able to jump in at any time without worrying about being lost or confused, although the crisis Soule writes will link with the other stories, they will be independent enough to not require reading in chronological order. This is recommended, though, to help heighten the experience and make it all more alive.

“What scares a Jedi?”

This will be a common theme in these new novels set at the height of the Republic and the expansion into the Outer Rim territories. At the meeting at Skywalker Ranch, the five authors had gotten together to brainstorm what they will be creating, when Cavan Scott asked the question, “What scares a Jedi?” Little did they know, this question was going to inspire the whole project.

We will follow a new Jedi character that is on the Starlight Beacon, a space station that helps to protect the galaxy. That Jedi will be surrounded by stories and myths from the universe that help play into the fear. We’ve also been hinted to expect one of the biggest fears of the Jedi to be the Nihil, a band of anarchist marauders. It will be exciting to see the Jedi fight off someone different than the Sith, Stormtroopers, or Robots.

Coming in August

The High Republic: Light of the Jedi will be the first novel planned to release to kick off the start of this new epic story. The other titles are Into The Dark by Claudia Gray, A Test of Courage by Justina Ireland, The High Republic Adventures by Daniel Jose, and finally Star Wars: The High Republic by Cavan Scott.

The novels and comics will go through different publishers, which seems like the right move for Disney to make. Considering how they only went with EA for their video games and the success of the first two Battlefronts wasn’t as great as expected, they are going the right direction with putting their eggs in different baskets. The success of the novels and comics will hopefully play a role in a new Star Wars video game because we all know there aren’t enough of those.

I have spoken

Something that is set within the High Republic where there is an abundance of Jedi around the galaxy, as well as problems, it seems like this may be a good starting platform for a new Star Wars game, maybe a more open world and free, or even a new live-action show. A new Star Wars investigative show about crime-solving across the galaxy? I’d certainly tune in.

Either way, the novels seem like they will be an exciting addition to the Star Wars lore and introduce new characters and ideas that will help to expand the universe even more. With the new season of Clone Wars releasing each Friday, season two of Mandalorian in production, and the Obi-Wan Kenobi series being perfected, we will be having a lot of quality Star Wars content to come.

Thank you for reading and may the force be with you.
